Ex-McDonald’s Worker Reveals Secrets, Hacks and Biggest Pet Peeve

From endless beeping in the kitchen to how to hack your order, Jamie Calder lifts the lid on life behind the counter.

A former McDonald’s employee has spilled insider secrets from his time at the fast food giant – including his go-to menu hack and his biggest gripe with customers.

Jamie Calder, 20, who worked at McDonald’s for just over a year before heading to the University of Edinburgh, says one of the best tricks is to ask for burger seasoning on your Chicken Selects or nuggets.

“The seasoning for the burger patties is incredible on nuggets or Chicken Selects,” he told Hype Daily.

“If it’s quiet enough not to be an annoying request, I would highly recommend asking for it.”

He also revealed a time-saving tip for app users: if you check in while you’re close by, the kitchen will usually start preparing your order before you arrive.

As for the infamous kitchen soundtrack?

“The beeping comes from just about every machine – fries halfway cooked, fries fully cooked, the grills, fryers, drive-through, orders… everything beeps and it’s a nightmare,” he explained.

But Jamie’s biggest frustration came from customers who order “no salt” fries just to get them fresh.

“We’ll be in a rhythm and then have to wipe all the salt off the fry station and fry a new portion – only for them to add two packs of salt as soon as we hand them over,” he said.

And when it comes to customer behaviour, nothing beats the chaos caused by school-age kids.

“Spraying water guns, tossing tubs of sauce… the worst was when someone blocked the bathroom sink with a plastic bag and flooded the place,” Jamie recalled.

From hacks to headaches, his insider knowledge shows there’s a lot more going on behind the golden arches than meets the eye.
