Peter Sellers’ rare 1960 Bentley S2 Continental Drophead Coupé, one of just 60 made, heads to Bonhams auction with £120k estimate alongside memorabilia and film history.

Peter Sellers’ Classic Bentley Set for Auction at £120k

The late film legend’s rare 1960 S2 Continental Drophead Coupé, one of only 60 ever built, goes under the hammer at Bonhams this September.

A rare Bentley once owned by comedy icon Peter Sellers is heading to auction with an estimated price of up to £120,000.

The 1960 Bentley S2 Continental Drophead Coupé, one of just 60 right-hand drive models ever produced, was bought by Sellers in 1961.

Unusually for the star – who was known for quickly trading in his cars – he kept this one for nearly five years.

Sellers had the Bentley maintained by luxury dealer Jack Barclay with no expense spared, even modifying it in 1962 with distinctive quad headlamps that predated those seen on later S3 models.

Invoices also record smaller touches such as a “smoke glass mirror with longer arm,” still present on the car today.

The history file suggests the car has had general servicing and some light replacements, like its hood and carpets, but no major restoration.

As such, it remains much as it was when Sellers owned it, though now in need of recommissioning or possible restoration.

Alongside the car, the winning bidder will receive a collection of Sellers memorabilia, including a signed photo of him as Inspector Clouseau, a 1963 movie poster for The Wrong Arm of the Law, a 1960 Best of The Goon Shows Vol. 2 LP, and press cuttings relating to the actor.

Sellers, who became a household name through The Goon Show and his iconic role as Chief Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther series, also won acclaim for his multiple roles in Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 masterpiece Dr. Strangelove.

The Bentley will be sold by Bonhams in Chichester, West Sussex, on Saturday, 13 September, with a guide price of £100,000 to £120,000. For fans of film and classic motoring alike, it’s a chance to own a piece of cinematic and automotive history.
