Ex-Sainsbury’s Worker Doubles Income by Reselling Hidden Gems From Charity Shops

Emily Derrick quit her supermarket job to turn thrifting into a full-time career – now she makes £2,000 a month.

A mum-of-two who once worked night shifts at Sainsbury’s has doubled her income by turning second-hand bargains into big profits online.

Emily Derrick, 28, from Bristol, began reselling items on Vinted as a side hustle before quitting her £800-a-month supermarket job in May 2025 to go full-time.

She now earns more than £2,000 a month by hunting down hidden gems in charity shops and car boot sales.

Her thrifting journey began with small wins, including a Buffalo coat snapped up for £2 and resold for £95, and a pair of designer brogues worth over £200 bought for just a few pounds.

One of her biggest finds so far has been a pair of unworn Gina heels worth £695, picked up for only £9.99 at a local hospice shop.

Emily has made over £11,000 on Vinted alone since August last year, with additional sales on Tilt and eBay.

“It was a hobby that got out of hand,” she told Hype Daily. “I loved feeling like I had my own little shop.”

Balancing the early shifts at Sainsbury’s with parenting wasn’t sustainable, but reselling gave her both financial freedom and flexibility.

“Working at Sainsbury’s grocery picking wasn’t ideal with the early hours and looking after the kids,” she explained.

Her advice for aspiring resellers is to experiment and use tools like Google Lens to identify valuable items.

“Don’t be afraid to go for brands you haven’t heard of, as long as the item looks good quality,” she said.

From supermarket shifts to full-time thrifting, Emily has turned her love of bargain hunting into a career – proving there’s real profit in pre-loved fashion.
