KFC Shuts All 11 Branches in Denmark After Failing Food Hygiene Inspections

Fast food giant closes doors as it searches for a new franchise operator.

Chicken lovers in Denmark have been left disappointed after every KFC in the country abruptly closed down following poor food hygiene ratings.

The chain had 11 outlets across Denmark – including three in Copenhagen, two in Odense and others in Rødovre, Greve, Tilst, Horsens, Vejle and Herning – but all have now shut while the company looks for a new franchise operator.

According to Hype Daily, the closures followed inspections in early June by The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.

None of the branches achieved the top “happy smiley” rating, with four restaurants receiving “unhappy smileys” and seven given “neutral” ones.

The smiley system, introduced in 2001, is designed to help Danish consumers judge hygiene standards in shops, cafés and restaurants.

KFC’s West European head office confirmed the decision to suspend operations in Denmark until a new business partner can take over the franchise.

Reactions online have been mixed. “The colonel would be turning in his grave,” one fan joked, while another added: “Too much finger licking.”

Others welcomed the closure, with one commenter saying: “About time. More junk than food.”

For now, Denmark’s fried chicken fans will have to look elsewhere for their bucket fix – with no word yet on when or if the brand will return.
